So we got a massive response to my last post and as a result comments are now moderate. I won’t be screening them too heavily but anything that hides behind the anonymity of the internet to be rude, curse, or incoherently argue will be deleted. So if your comment doesn’t show up right away don’t be worried, it’s just waiting to be approved.
So whenever I’m on the metro in DC I’m always amazed by the number of blind people that I see walking around. I give them major props for striking out and not letting something get in the way of them enjoying their lives. I was also watching two people speak in sign language on the metro today and was thinking about all the things they had to overcome living in a world of silence, learning sign language, what they mean, learning to read without articulation, finding friends who can sign or are willing to learn to sign to communicate with you…they get my respect for the things that they over come. And I also thought, so how do you convey sarcasm through sign? it would be my main concern if I ever learned. It took me awhile to learn out to convey witty sayings through Chinese. That might be cultural though, since lots of times I would convert english to chinese.
Anyways, to the many commenters on the 92.3 incident, I don’t think many people really understand why so many people find it offensive. Update: OCA National issued press release here. SF Chroniclel article here. Fallout Central is organizing more of a protest and there was a protest in NY yesterday. The very things they said and asked are racist. Yeah, maybe it is an automated voice, but I believe the inputter of the words was still a person and automated or not does not erase the person’s responsibility for the racists and stereotypical things and questions they asked. And if you want to be a comical act then do so without dragging race and stereotypes into the equations. Find things that are universally funny and don’t offend others. And if you want to argue that they themselves have the right to say what they want, then I and OCA have the right to say what we want and call them out on their racist stuff. Final thought, here is a great post about Vicki Shu’s appearance on Fox news. The author really breaks down the whole interview and takes a great feminist slant and how Vicki was interrupted multiple times while the other interviewee was allowed to speak. Anyways, moving on.
PSB is doing a showing of a number of movies for the month of May, since it is APA Heritage Month, yay! Check out Slanted Screen and Sentenced Home. I’ve heard good things about them so you should check it out.
Found this interesting article about gender and alcohol and how women who drink alcohol deteriorate quicker in performing tasks than men. They have the same symptoms but not as quickly.
Let’s talk about also, how Tim Brummer, the man who created an anti-immigration group that he pretended was headed by Vietnamese people. It’s such a shady sleazy move and the best part was his reasoning:
Brummer claimed that because he eats Vietnamese food and is half-Vietnamese “in my own mind,” he wasn’t really fibbing [about representing the Vietnamese community].
ohmgiod, let me go and represent all the people’s food that I eat cause I eat it and I’m half whatever in my mind. Why do people think they can coop and represent like that?
I guess this is just a random posting things that I found interesting. Sorry if you are looking for some sort of consistency. Campus Progress posted an interesting sheet on Affirmative Action.
I guess that’s it, I thought I had more. Peace peoples.
